Breakfast was good November 30th, 2006

Made it to the Pan this morning for breakfast at 6:30am. Damn that was early but the food was alright. Nothing fancy but can’t go wrong with scrambled eggs, sausages, and hash browns. The rest of the day was a blur. I got my rjs template to work in ROR though! yippee!

6am for breakfast November 29th, 2006

Ally and I are heading downtown to the Pan Pacific hotel tomorrow morning for breakfast at 6am. Yep, you heard me, 6 freaking am! It’s for the Christmas make-a-wish something where we donate a toy and get free breakfast. So my question is that yes it is a relatively good breakfast for cheap but is it worth getting up at 5:30am for?? That’s an ungodly hour. The fact that we’re making some unfortunate kids really happy doesn’t really factor into the equation for me. I guess the real question then is whether or not i am getting the point of this whole breakfast thing. Damn that’s early!

What did I do today? drove around in the frigid cold that is Vancouver. Went out to UBC to show around my cousin. That place has changed a lot since I was there. They have starbucks, timmies, a shopper’s, and a gold’s gym. It’s nice to see greedy capitalism kick some UBC food service ass!!

La Casa Gelato November 28th, 2006

Went to La Casa Gelato yesterday on Venables in Vancouver for Ice Cream on what could be one of the coldest days of the year. The place was completely deserted except for the owner, Vincent Misceo and his wife. We had all the ice cream we wanted to sample! sweeet! I ended up getting a chocolate english toffee, Ally the Raspberry Truffle, and Cheryl the Coconut red rice. mmmm.

Shout out to Marti in Hong Kong who gave me some invaluable coaching on my career late last night. It’s amazing how much can change in just a couple years. keep playing all out!

car stuck in snow November 27th, 2006

My cousin Cheryl’s in town today so picked her up from the airport, went to shanghai river in richmond, went to see my grandmother, dropped by the Lim’s to get an air mattress, went to T&T to get dinner, went to Ally’s house to dig out their driveway, then got STUCK in the snow!! The bmw was totally stuck on the road outside of her house. We spent about 1/2 hour digging, pushing, and rocking the car until it finally got out. In that time, I learned that the bmw is rear-wheel drive, putting the cardboard underneath a wheel that is stuck doesn’t do all that much, i kind of like the smell of burning rubber in a weird way, snow tires don’t do shit when parked in deep snow, and two girls in the back seat for a rear-wheel drive car can get you way better traction.

Being Dave To is having a smile on face after an awesome powder day November 26th, 2006

Went to Cypress Bowl (or Cypress Mountain is what they’re calling it now) for the first day of the season today. Had a later start than I hoped for considering I woke up at 6am from the excitement and couldn’t go back to sleep. By the time we got up there in the FJ, the parking lots were packed and we had to do overflow parking. For those of you who don’t know, that means something like a 1km hike to the ticket booths. We didn’t let that stop us though.

After a couple warm-up runs with the girls, York and I took to the trees and found some awesome pockets of deep powder. There had been something like 40 cms of new snow in the last 48. We spent most of the day on moon’s off of sunrise chair. The trees were pretty thick and the run was steep but the fresh snow was sweet. For the last run of the day, we went up the eagle chair hoping to go down a HUGE patch of fresh snow that will be used for the mogul and aerial competition for the 2010 olympics. When we got to the trailhead, patrollers were there to stop ppl from entering. We decided that it was too good to pass up so we went up again, this time ducking under boundary ropes before the trailhead. It was super deep but also sketchy as the trees were thick and there were absolutely no previous tracks. Luckily, we found a ski patrol traverse after a few turns. We took that and found what we were looking for. If we had kept going down though, we probably would have ended up way down by the sea-to-sky highway a few days later. Good navigation York. The picture below is the view at the top of the trail. The parking lot is below. And in front is a pristine (almost) field of deep powder. *droool*. That was one of the best runs evar.

From 1st day of th…

Also check out some vids of York and I running into trees in our quest for fresh snow.

First Ski Day tomorrow November 25th, 2006

Shit i’m excited!!! the locals have gotten record dumps this november and tomorrow will be our first day up at Cypress bowl. Can’t wait! Unfortunately, I think the rest of the skiers and boarders of Vancouver are thinking the exact same thing. It’s going to be chaos up there but it’ll all be worth it if I can get one hit of fresh powder. It’s been over 2 motherfucking years! damn toronto and it’s piddly blue mountain. Thank goodness I’m back on the west coast.

In other news, I tried out Papa Murphy’s pizza today. It’s the first time i’ve done take’n'bake pizza. I don’t know what entrepreneur decided to make a pizza shop where they give you uncooked pizza, expecting you to take it home, pop it in the oven for 20 minutes, and then eat. Nope, it’s not delisio, it’s papa murphy’s! Having said that, the pizza was actually pretty good. The pepperoni was not so good but the ‘Cowboy’ was tasty. I’d go back.

javascripts! November 24th, 2006

Trying to integrate some DHTML and scriptaculous into unbius. No luck yet. I wish things were as simple as they are in the demos. Unfortunately, Ruby on Rails complicates things. Anyone ever have experience dimming backgrounds and making a div appear in the middle of the screen? Been playing with lightbox gone wild.

Got a call today from this guy from Great Escapes Vacation. He told us that we’d won a free vacation to Florida and the Bahamas because of this contest we’d entered at the snow show. Both ally and I were like no way! but after winning the FJ, who knows right? But then the guy, whose name is Wes, told us that there was a promotional discount of $399 each that we had to pay. And we had to fly our way down to Orlando. Then we were told that we had to make the decision while he stayed on the line, give him a credit card number, and pay this discount fee (which is non-refundable). hmm. Questionable. The vacation sounded really nice though. In the end, the whole thing sounded way too suspect so we said no. But for a minute there, we thought we were twice lucky from the snow show. Too bad.

Being Dave To is blah November 23rd, 2006

well, today felt like blah. I’m tired of inviting people for Landmark. It’s frustrating and I feel like i’m confronting my own demons in the face of everyone I know, which isn’t all that fun. Went to Shabusen with Ally and Dan B. from Toronto. Lots of bbq’d meat and sushi. However, I don’t know if I’d go there again. Next time if I want to eat all-u-can-eat sushi, i’ll go to Richmond Sushi where they have a better selection. If I want korean bbq, I’ll go to Insadong, which destroys Shabusen when it comes to bbq meat. Shabusen gives you the two together, but both are kinda mediocre versions of the real thing (not to say that Richmond Sushi is real sushi).

Found this brain-teaser on the internet. Want to test your ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking skills? (and yes i did get it and this is my transparent attempt at showing you how smart i am).

You are given two ropes and a lighter. This is the only equipment you can use. You are told that each of the two ropes has the following property: if you light one end of the rope, it will take exactly one hour to burn all the way to the other end. But it doesn’t have to burn at a uniform rate. In other words, half the rope may burn in the first five minutes, and then the other half would take 55 minutes. The rate at which the two ropes burn is not necessarily the same, so the second rope will also take an hour to burn from one end to the other, but may do it at some varying rate, which is not necessarily the same as the one for the first rope. Now you are asked to measure a period of 45 minutes. How will you do it?

Some Recent Pics November 22nd, 2006

Reviewing my blog, it seems to be very wordy. So here are some pics:

Some cards that we made as thankyou’s for Food For Thought. If you like, talk to Julie Row, a card-making Martha Stewart:

Being Dave To is having a sore thumb November 20th, 2006

Wanted to go off-roading in the FJ today but instead played Tennis 2K2 on Sega Dreamcast for something like 3 hours straight today. That’s pretty sad but to pour salt onto the wound, I couldn’t win a single match against York. Now, my thumb is numb. dammit.
