Health Sites are in for 2007 January 5th, 2007
Just as I’m launching Unbius, there seems to be a slew of media about big web 2.0 health initiatives that are coming for Q1/Q2 of 2007. Examples, Google and AOL’s Steve Case. This can be construed as good I guess because this must be a viable market for the social web. Also, I think as the general public sees the big players enter, they will grow more confident in using and contributing to these types of services. Web 2.0 is extending beyond the arenas of Digg, Myspace, and Youtube into serious topics on health and wellbeing. I think there’s more to come as entrepreneurs explore other areas such as global politics, environmentalism, and business/economics.
One of the caveats however is that this Web 2.0 movement is being initiated and driven either by techie men between ages 19-35 (give or take some years) or teenagers that are just in it really to meet others of the opposite sex. Can we get a critical mass of regular, everyday people with health concerns to go online and discuss? What kind of incentives can there be? I’ll have to think on that. Then again, I think Google and Revolution Health may already have the answers.
In other news, I just read that Kaboose, the company I use to work for in Tdot, just acquired Bubbleshare. Read the press release here. The deal went through for 2.25 mil US. Damn! Kaboose has got mad money. Their stock went public when I was working there and at the time I think they had a market cap of around 10 mil. Bubbleshare is supposedly a very good photosharing site. It’s gotten industry raves from both sides of the border. The CEO and co-founder, Albert Lai, is only 28. This is already his second entrepreneurial success. not too shabby. I think Kaboose made the purchase not only for the product, but for the top-notch tech team at Bubbleshare. I think this will be a wake-up call for the devs at Kaboose, cuz these new guys know their shit.
